Mississippi Legislator Who Introduced “Gulf of America” Bill Says It Was Just a Joke

Mississippi state Rep. Steve Holland (D), who introduced a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, is saying that it was all a joke as a way to bring attention to anti-immigration legislation that his Republican colleagues are considering in his state.

Holland spoke with the Blog of New Orleans this afternoon. This is what that page is reporting:

Turns out Holland has a bit of a goof streak going on. He called Gambit to tell us the bill is his tongue-in-cheek single-finger salute to mock his Republican peers obsessed with illegal immigration.

"That's exactly what it is," he says. He's throwing the bill into session with his Republican counterparts, who he says should be focused on helping "feed, clothe and educate children, take care of older adults, provide economic development and high systems in this state, and all the hell they want to talk about is running illegal immigrants out, and drug testing welfare and Medicaid recipients — all superfluous crap as far as I'm concerned. So I thought I'd just join them with a bill to chew on, saying the Gulf of America instead of the Gulf of Mexico, since everything Mexican and Hispanic is 'so bad.' Nothing but a 'spamalot' bill is all it is. Tongue-in-cheek."

He continues:

"Nobody in Mississippi has responded, but I've been responding to phone calls all over the world," Holland says. "Maybe I didn't think about it, but hell, I've been here 29 years, I got to try and have some fun as best I can with all these jerks."

Looks like Holland got his inspiration from the Great Stephen Colbert!

For Immediate Release – An Open Letter to Mississippi State Representative D. Stephen Holland (D)

Marshall, MN – contact information

Dear Rep. Holland,

We were astonished to learn of your bill, HB150, to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”

Apparently you don’t take your responsibilities seriously. Surely the State of Mississippi has more pressing matters to attend to than this. Did you stop to think of the expense of rewriting textbooks or changing maps?

For that matter, did you stop to think about what this bill would do to Mississippi’s reputation? If this bill passes the legislature and is signed into law, perhaps it is time to rename the Mississippi River. After all, sharing a name with a state that wants to rewrite maps out of disdain for Mexicans would be a disgrace to the rest of the nation.

The Lincoln River would be a suitable substitute name, in honor of a great man, don’t you think?

We call on you to withdraw your bill and spare us all further embarrassment.

Yours Truly,

Bob Quasius

Santorum Wages Fake Catholic War on Obama: Says President Wants Women Priests

GOP candidate and old school Catholic Rick Santorum is definitely part of the 40%. Well, the 40% of US Catholics who don't want women to be ordained as priests. In the wake of a fake religious Catholic war that the GOP has now begun to wage against the Obama administration, Santorum went on record this week to say that Obama wants women priests in the Catholic Church. GREAT! We think that is an awesome idea (btw, all the Rebels are Catholic).

Here is the video:

Santorum, a Catholic whose views are stuck in Pre-Vatican II, might have not seen a 2005 poll that says that 60% of US Catholics (and 64% of Americans) should allow the Church to ordain women as priests. Santorum has also been slammed by many for his comments about the US Catholic Church's child sex abuse scandal that rocked the institution a few years ago. This is what he said about that:

Lamenting the scandal of pedophile priests, he wrote in a Catholic publication: "When the culture is sick, every element in it becomes infected. While it is no excuse for this scandal, it is no surprise that Boston, a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America, lies at the center of the storm."

Bruins Goalie Tim Thomas Compares Obama Catholic Controversy to Silence on Nazi Germany

Dear Tim Thomas,

Please stick to playing hockey. Really. Please.

Thomas, who already faced a controversy last month when he refused to attend the White House's celebration for the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup championship, has now decided to enter the "culture war" that is has surfaced in this country with Catholics and the Obama administration.

This is what Thomas posted on his Facebook page yesterday:

I Stand with the Catholics in the fight for Religious Freedom.

"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."

– by Martin Niemöller, prominent German anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor, best known as the author of the poem First they came….

A few things, Tim:

  • The "fight for Religious Freedom" that Thomas refers is perplexing. Is this the Roman Empire again? Are Catholics getting killed? Sent to concentration camps? A bit extreme, Tim?
  • If Thomas has an issue, you would think it would be about the whole "government shouldn't tell me what to do" issue. Does he realize that this whole Catholic thing has to do with the following: not giving employees of Catholic institutions basic health care coverage? That is all, Tim. This isn't the flipping Inquisition (oh, wait, those were Catholics persecuting Jews, our bad).

Tim, please stick to hockey. Leave the silly uniformed comments to others.
