The Bee Gees’ Robin Gibb Dies From Cancer at Age 62: Cue Up “I Started a Joke” and Smile

Robin Gibb, one of the members of the Bee Gees, died today after a battle with cancer. While many will start evoking the Bee Gees as a "disco band," (hello, CNN), we want to remember Gibb for one of our favorite songs ever, the Bee Gees' "I Started a Joke" from 1968. Robin Gibb sang the lead in that song, and we have always loved it.

Here is a performance of the song from around 1968.

.

I started a joke,
which started the whole world crying,
but I didn't see that the joke was on me, oh no.
I started to cry,
which started the whole world laughing,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.
I looked at the skies,
running my hands over my eyes,
and I fell out of bed,
hurting my head from things that I'd said.
Til I finally died,
which started the whole world living,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.
I looked at the skies,
running my hands over my eyes,
and I fell out of bed,
hurting my head from things that I'd said.
'Til I finally died,
which started the whole world living,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was one me.

And here is a live version from later in the Bee Gees' career. Still one of the prettiest songs we have ever heard.

Oh, yeah, and if you want to play "Staying Alive" too, that's cool. Peace to you, Robin Gibb.
