When we first shared the gruesome story of a soccer referee getting beheaded by fans at an amateur soccer in game in Brazil earlier today on our Facebook page, many people were incredulous. Outlets such as the Associated Press have now confirmed the same information we found on local Brazilian press. There is also a video of the incident that quite frankly shouldn’t be on the Internet.
Here is what is being reported. From ESPN FC:
An amateur football match in Brazil led to two deaths as a referee was beheaded by spectators after he had stabbed a player.
The shocking incidents occurred in Maranhao, Brazil, last Sunday. According to reports, referee Otavio Jordao da Silva fatally stabbed footballer Josenir dos Santos Abreu.
Dos Santos Abreu is believed to have struck the referee after questioning a decision. In retaliation, Jordao da Silva stabbed the player.
Having witnessed the incident, an outraged group of spectators turned on the referee. He was tied up, beaten, stoned and quartered. They then put his head on a stake and planted it in the middle of the pitch.
One man, Luiz Moraes de Souza, 27, has been arrested over the incident. Police are searching for two more suspects.
The Public Safety Department of the state of Maranhao said in a statement that it started when referee Otavio da Silva expelled player Josenir Abreu from a game last weekend. The two got into a fist fight, then Silva took out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who died on his way to the hospital.
After witnessing the attack, fans invaded the field to attack the referee, who was stoned to death and quartered. Local news media are also reporting that the spectators decapitated Silva and stuck his head on a stake in the middle of the field.
In an official statement, Valter Costa, police chief of Santa Ines in Maranhão, confirmed the ongoing investigation and assured the public that suspects were being questioned.
“Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact. We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law.”
WTF. WTF. WTF.
