How do you answer racists who like to throw bananas at you? Over the weekend in a La Liga game at Villarreal, FC Barcelona defender Dani Alves cranked up the response with witty brilliance: just eat the banana.
The reaction to the Brazilian national’s move has earned online praised, as you might imagine. Here is a tweet from former Barça player Gary Lineker:
Someone in the crowd just threw a banana at Dani Alves. Picked it up, peeled it, ate it, and proceeded to take the corner. Top response.

The BBC ran a good piece about the incident and how Alves has been the target of racist fans in the past. The story also included these two quotes by Alves:
We have suffered this in Spain for some time. ou have to take it with a dose of humour.
If you don’t give it importance, they don’t achieve their objective.
This is very simple. There is no room for racism in the world’s greatest sport. Ever.
By the way, Barça won, 3-2.
