We got this from @hispanictips. Apparently, Korean pop star Hyorin of the group Sistar is getting all Latin in a new ad campaign for “Maté Tea of the Sun,” owned by Coca Cola. (Yes, we know that it is not “maté” in Spanish, it’s “mate.”)

Here is some of the translated copy to English:

Hyorin has a concept of sexy Latina style in her sexy red dance dress. She is showing a fit and healthy body. According to a representative of the brand, “Hyorin copper colored skin and fit body are suitable for the Latin dance style and she looks very passionate.”

The tea extract of the beverage comes from Brazil and Argentina which has refreshing taste and aroma that would make you feel the Latin style.

Wait there’s more from “Korea’s Beyoncé:”

In the pictures—which are known to be un-photoshopped, Hyorin turned into a sexy latin girl showing off her fit body and signature sexy tan skin in a Latin dance costume. The photos were taken while she was dancing ‘Maté dance’ that she choreographed by herself.

Hyorin said in the interview, ‘Maté dance’ has more big moves than Sistar’s song. It is a great dance that helps you exercise and burn calories faster. I think I just lost 3kg after the maté dance’”

“I enjoy drinking Maté dance as a substitute for water like real Latin woman. If you want to lose weight and stay healthy, eat what you want, dance, and drink maté tea,” she continued, revealing her secret to keeping her body fierce.

Something, anything, must be lost in translation, but it is not. There is actually a product by Coca-Cola called “Maté Tea of the Sun.” Here is a picture of the design from Ogilvy showing the Japanese version of the product:

Yes, it actually exists.

There is now a “Maté dance” in South Korea. Of course, there is.

Safe to say no one on the creative team even bothered to do some actual research and realize that “mate” is oh so much more.
