Looks like the “Cantinflas” movie started off pretty solid, considering its limited run this weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the film chronicling the life of Mexico’s film legend grossed $2,660,000 in 382 theaters. That comes out to an average of $6,963 per theater.
The LA Times called the Lionsgate/Pantelion production “strong.” Deadline.com said the film “sailed decently” during the Labor Day weekend, although it didn’t do as well as “Instructions Not Include,” the surprise 2013 hit from Lionsgate/Pantelion.
As for the reviews, you can catch them at Rotten Tomatoes. Most are saying that the movie has its moments but doesn’t fully capture Cantinflas’ legendary status in cinematic history (instead focusing too much on the making of “Around the World in 80 Days”). Nonetheless, everyone is pretty much agreeing that actor Óscar Jaenada rocked it as the lead.
