Miss Puerto Rico Suspended Indefinitely for Anti-Muslim Tweets

Yesterday the Miss Puerto Rico Organization issued the following release on Facebook, in response to a series of verified tweets by Destiny Vélez, the organization’s current Miss Puerto Rico for the Miss America pageant:

SAN JUAN, PR (December 19, 2015) – The Miss Puerto Rico Organization is a non-profit corporation that offers scholarship assistance and career opportunities to young women in Puerto Rico. As part of our unique identity, our program recognizes the elements of providing scholarships to young women; the traits of honesty, good character, talent, poise, intellect, leadership, and good judgment among today’s young women; and enables contestants to serve as role models to other young women with similar goals and characteristics.

In regards to Miss Puerto Rico, Destiny Vélez’s recent actions and conduct, the Miss Puerto Rico Organization feels that her words do not represent the integrity and esteem of our program, nor that of our board members, our sponsors and partners, or the National Organization.

Miss Vélez’s actions were in contradiction to the organization, and therefore as a consequence of her actions, she has been suspended indefinitely. The Miss Puerto Rico Organization will not tolerate any actions or behavior contrary to the Miss Puerto Rico Organization.

“I apologize to the people I have offended with my words. I am first and foremost an #UpStander and as such I stand up against bullying. The last thing I wanted to do was to bully anyone. Again, I apologize to anyone who felt offended with my words,” said Miss Vélez.

The Miss Puerto Rico Organization apologizes for the distress that Miss Velez’s actions and conduct may have caused.

Currently, the Twitter account for @MissAmerca_PR is not active, although several screen grabs of the deleted tweets are available:

Although born in Puerto Rico in 1995, Vélez actually started participating in Texas pageants, as early as 2005. She also a National Miss American Jr. Teen third runner-up for Texas (North) in 2009. Vélez returned to Puerto Rico in 2015 to win the Miss Puerto Rico crown for the Miss America pageant.

Wow. She stated facts and ya'll want her lynched. They are offended by American values. They are torturing and killing innocent people, Christians and non-Christians alike, and have stated they will kill more. They have and continue to destroy precious artifiacts and historical landmarks. And you want her torn apart for stating the facts?? She bullied nobody and has nothing to apologize for. That's the problem in this country -- everybody is panting for a reason to take offense at another person's viewpoint.  I guess the Miss Puerto Rico Organization isn't really about honesty and good character -- only bending over and shutting up. Geez. You all are the ones  who need to wake up and take your heads out of your asses.  As an American who is tired of watching her fellow citizens become more and more afraid to say anything for fear of offending the perpetually offended, I am proud of her for having stated actual, verifiable FACTS.

Someone else was behind this airheads comments... Trained like a little doggie to to utter those words. This airhead would not know a Muslim if they stood in front of her face.  As to the Hijab, the napkin this fool is referring to, maybe she needs several of them to cover those saggy inner thighs and her head.  One of the ugliest Puerto Rican women, triganias I have ever seen running for Miss Puerto Rico, and I have known many PR woman...there are thousands of Puerto Rican women more beautiful in bodily features and character.  This fool brings disgrace to Puerto Rico and insults the thousands of Muslims who live and contribute to its culture and economy.....

She should switch to Trump's Miss USA pageant.

The management of that program would likely applaud her for her Islamophobic remarks.  Of course, she would also be dissed for being Latina -- never mind.
