El pueblo hondureño habló/The Honduran People Have Spoken

English Version

It was one of the most atypical in the history of Honduras, but the Honduran presidential electoral process moved along. Orderliness was at a high level, and although there were some disrespectful and threatening acts, (typically from a representative of a political party), the truth is that there were also high levels of tolerance at the voting centers.

This was expressed emphatically both in the polls and in the faces of the people who went to them to vote, even if these polling centers only met the minimum conditions for the exercise of suffrage. At the end of the day on Sunday, November 26, Salvador Nasralla was the resounding winner of the presidential race, and he was followed by the illegal candidacy of Juan Orlando Hernández of the National Party and then Luis Zelaya of the Liberal Party.

However, the will of the people in this election indicates much more than the selection of a president or a ruling party. What is in this new in the 2017 scenario is the rupture of two historical and harmful realities that subjected the Honduran people. First, longstanding bipartisanism fell with the triumph of the Opposition Alliance Party —a joining of two other parties, Libre and PINU— that broke the historical situation that made both the National Party and the Liberal Party representatives of the extreme right of Honduras. And second, it put the brakes on the dictatorship, a threat which was embodied by the extreme violator of the Constitution of the Republic of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández who, like a wounded beast on the defensive, still clings to the power he loves so much.

A Suspicious and Dangerous Silence

The atypical nature of this electoral process was evident starting with the attitude of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (the Tribunal Supremo Electoral, or TSE). The TSE is a servile organization in the absolute service of Juan Orlando Hernández and his quest to remain in power. Hours before the voting process began, the TSE had the proper technology so that it could offer an immediate declaration of the results of the election, but they have only given silence. Through this process and given the current attitude of the TSE, we can conclude that Honduras is a no man’s land. In Honduras, the one who has money also has power, and therefore can manipulate the energy in their favor.

Historically, the electoral process on the day of the election in Honduras was extended by the TSE to ensure that those who had not been able to reach the polls on time could still participate and vote. However, the current TSE did not prolong it; the current TSE did not want an extension in the voting day because absentee voters ensured the first steps of the fraud would be a success. Furthermore, the TSE has never taken such a long time to announce and approve the voting results. Given that historically there hasn’t been the technology that we have now, such irrational silence cannot be anything other than an intentional fraud clearly inclined to favor the illegal re-election promoted by Juan Orlando Hernández.

But the unjust actions of the Honduran TSE are not an exception to the rule at this moment in Honduras.  Instead, it is the reality of a Honduran institution that has been broken, tainted and manipulated in favor of Juan Orlando Hernández. For this reason, there is no hope in the armed forces, and there is no hope in the Honduran Supreme Court of Justice. There is no hope in our civil organizations, who should be a servant of the people (churches, NGOs) and everything that institutions represent, because they only respond to the dictator. In this way, in Honduras, things are complex, atypical, and dangerous. It is essential that we to take another step towards the defense of this vote because —without any doubt— the right-wing intends on stealing it.
There is also no doubt that in this process the members of the TSE are delaying this absurdity because it is also a slap in the face for them. The pressure falls on them: the pressure that comes from Juan Orlando, who trembles with fear, and from private companies, who have a lot to lose by colluding with his dictatorship that drowns in corruption.

Journalistic Mediocrity and a Submissive Press

Where is the objectivity? Who took away our freedom of the press? Where is the transparency of the media? Where is the right of access to accurate information for the Honduran people?  The Honduran media and the corporate media are exposed. Their level immorality has no limits and journalistic morality only has value when they are paid off. It has been horrible to see the lowliness of people like Renato Álvarez or Rodrigo Wong Arévalo lying to the Honduran people using the fabrications of Arturo Corrales with data that shows they want to install a lie and protect the electoral fraud.

The grand lie they endorse tries to hide the fraudulent leadership of the Honduran National Party who, seeing itself potentially unprotected, wants to cover up the looting of the state coffers, the state-sanctioned murder of Honduran citizens (like Berta) and the sacking of the people’s territories for over fifty years with lion-like, nefarious, and illegal contracts approved in record time and without proper regulation.

Regardless, it is not strange that the media in Honduras are owned by the same business people who are politicians, who have money, who lust for power and who fuck people over, who go to church services or Mass to be filled with holiness in exchange for a fifty lempiras donation and their miserable share of power. Still, what the media does is deplorable and shameful. They sell their words and their dignity for a little money and protection, and this is as vile as stealing from the nation’s Social Security or hiding the facts in the murder of Berta Cáceres.

The Agenda of Militarization

Throughout the regime of Juan Orlando, his great characteristic has been the return of power to the armed forces (now the soul-less forces), who historically have been linked to crimes and the torture of people who disagree with their ideas of power or propose other routes for Honduras.

However, the last few days have indicated the obvious. “We will remove the energy of those who revolt” said Mauricio Oliva, the president of the Honduran National Congress, referring to those of us who marched and the gases they used to repress us. Or, as Juan Orlando Hernández would say, “We have 20,000 military and military police to maintain order in case the rioters want to impede the electoral process.”

There is much to protect in this servant-like attitude of Juan Orlando with the military. Nobody knows anything about the actual rates of violence and security, or how those statistics are used and with whom it is used. That this data is a secret forces Juan Orland to keep the heartless armed forces happy and he has to allow them a certain power that, for some time, has been taken away from them.

More threatening than the Honduran armed forces are the creators of the Battalion 316, the former symbol of the death from the armed forces, and their death squad. They now disguise themselves as members of the National Congress and speak of “national security” in the same way that in the 1980s they spoke of the “doctrine of national security.” Because of them, of course I feel panic, because —just like yesterday— they will kill today if necessary to ensure their place in power and their control of our homeland. They know who they are and they enjoy bleeding the country.

Our Homeland Is Always First

There are many unkept promises and unknown truths after this electoral process, and therefore many doubts for the future on Honduras. However, the people should know that we did not vote on Sunday only because of the vote, and we did not believe that this vote alone would change Honduran history. The Honduras of our dreams is much more than a single vote—it is perpetual work, it is the road to social justice, and it is the hope of the new generations.

Honduras is seemingly on a path towards destruction. There is no proposal, there is no political intention. The institutions had been broken and the people themselves had lost the will to fight. However, since the coup d’état in 2009 another force has emerged, new dreams have been dreamt, and the energy of the people take up the task.

The answer to this situation is in the Honduran people, among the Honduran people, and with the Honduran people—those who are dedicated to the struggle to rebuild history, clean our memories, and write better times for all Hondurans.

The Honduran people are awake, and you religious, military, political, economic, national, and international oligarchy will see us emerge and you will pay for what you have done.
