VIDEO: Why Sheriff Joe Arpaio Is Really an Arrogant Pendejo

Talk about a softball interview.

Seriously? Tents in 120-degree weather and Obama birther talk?

Yes, this is the Sheriff Joe at his best. Not humble at all. The same Sheriff Joe whose office was racially profiling Latinos.

Univision News Secret Camera Reveals How Possible Racial Profiling Can Be in Arizona

Today, Univision News, in partnership with ABC News, produced a report showing one of its producers being pulled over in Maricopa County for 'impeding traffic."

Or was it for "driving while Mexican?" You decide. Here is the video report. What do you think?

Noticiero Univision Misleads Viewers with Headline of “KKK Members” Celebrating Arpaio Win

Today, the video section of Noticiero Univision posted a report with a headline that read "Members of the Klu Klux Klan Celebrate Arpaio's Victory." As we watched the video, the reporter kept saying that the members allegedly were part of the KKK and never really reported that they were actually members. Throughout the video we see a black woman expressing her outrage for what the four hooded people were doing, as well as others' anger.

However, the most important part of the story—that the hooded people were Latino and that maybe, just maybe, they were protesting Joe Arpaio's re-election as sheriff of Maricopa County—was revealed at the end. Sorry, Noticiero Univision, your title truly misled viewers. That is just poor reporting. The next time, report a headline that actually tells what the story is about? Here is the video. What do you think?

Bipartisan PAC to Oust Arpaio Produces First Ad: “Tell Joe It’s Time to Go”

This week Citizens for Professional Law Enforcement, which according to its site, is an "independent expenditure political campaign committee formed to defeat Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio," released its first ad against Arpaio. Just two words: Pink underwear.

In the meantime, CFPLE is telling voters to choose Democratic candidate Paul Penzone on Election Day. Here is the ad. We think it is pretty effective, kind of like a demented and twisted "Schoolhouse Rock."

Department of Justice Breaks Off Negotiations with Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Office

After Maricopa Country Sheriff's Office received the following letter from the US Department of Justice today, the MCSO and Sheriff Joe Arpaio did not honor the deadline, so negotiations to address a civil right case against MCSO have broken off. The reason? AZCentral.com reports that "the Sheriff's Office refused to consider appointing an independent monitor in an effort to resolve the federal government's racial profiling allegations."

The report from AZCentral.com continues:

Arpaio said he refused to comply because President Barack Obama's administration is "trying to strong arm me into submission only for its political gain."

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department declined further comment, but legal action against the Sheriff's Office once again appears imminent.

Representatives for both the Sheriff's Office and the Justice Department have said repeatedly that they want to avoid going to court in an effort to resolve the profiling allegations detailed in a report the Justice Department released in mid December. The negotiations between the two parties were crucial to avoiding litigation, but the Justice Department's letter to Arpaio's attorneys indicate that meetings were spotty and not productive.

The Latest on @RealSheriffJoe: Woman Sues Sheriff’s Office For Being Shackled During Birth

Today's Sheriff Joe Arpaio update comes from Tucson, where Carlos Galindo broke a story on TucsonCitizen.com. Galindo, whose calls himself Arizona's "Unapologetic Liberal' and is a local talk show host in Tucson, posted this afternoon news that a woman has filed a lawsuit against Arpaio, the Maricopa Counry Sheriff's Office, and other defendents alleging that she was shackled during childbirth when she was in custody of the MCSO.

Here is the text that Galindo cites, a press release written by the woman's lawyers:

DECEMBER 20, 2011
Phoenix, AZ
RE: WOMAN SHACKLED DURING LABOR SUES JOE ARPAIO

Mendiola v. Arpaio, et. al

Arizona District Court Number 11CV2512

Yesterday, through her attorneys, Miriam Mendiola-Martinez filed a federal lawsuit against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the Maricopa Medical Center, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Officers, and Maricopa Medical Center doctors and nurses, alleging that she was shackled by Maricopa County Sheriff’s officers during labor and after her Cesarean delivery. Her attached complaint, alleges that Sheriff Arpaio and the other defendants violated several constitutional rights, to include the Eighth Amendment rights to be free from cruel and unusual punishment and the right of prisoners to adequate health care.

The complaint states that in December 2009, while she was held as a prisoner in Maricopa County jails, Ms. Mendiola-Martinez was repeatedly shackled during her labor and while she recovered from a Cesarean birth. She also alleges that a MCSO deputy or correctional officer forced her to walk, with her hands and feet shackled, wearing only a hospital gown and with a bleeding surgery wound, out of the hospital and then back into the hospital while she was being discharged from the hospital.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Medical Association oppose the shackling of women in labor or recuperating from delivery. In 2008, in Nelson v. Norris, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals found the shackling of women prisoners during labor to constitute cruel and unusual punishment, in violation of the Eighth Amendment.

The Arizona Department of Corrections eliminated the practice of shackling women in labor or in postpartum recovery in 2003. In 2007, the United States Marshal’s Service eliminated the practice of shackling women in labor. In 2008, the Federal Bureau of Prisons eliminated the practice of shackling women in labor.

Ms. Mendiola-Martinez is represented by Attorneys Joy Bertrand, Shannon Peters, and John McBee.

As of this posting, neither Arpaio nor the MCSO has commented on this suit.

Rep. Grijalva Calls for Resignation of @RealSheriffJoe: Office Mishandled 400+ Sex Crimes

Today, Arizona Congressman Raúl Grijalva released a statement calling for the resignation of controversial Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, after reports from the Associated Press revealed that Arpaio, one of the country's most vocal and public defenders of Arizona's draconian SB 1070 immigration, directed a force that mishandled over 400 sex-crimes cases since 2007.

As reported by The Associated Press

[The cases] were among more than 400 sex-crimes reported to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office during a three-year period ending in 2007 — including dozens of alleged child molestations — that were inadequately investigated and in some instances were not worked at all, according to current and former police officers familiar with the cases. In El Mirage alone, where Arpaio’s office was providing contract police services, officials discovered at least 32 reported child molestations — with victims as young as 2 years old — where the sheriff’s office failed to follow through, even though suspects were known in all but six cases. [. . .]

Arpaio’s office refused several requests over a period of months to answer questions about the investigations and declined a public records request for an internal affairs report, citing potential disciplinary actions. Brian Sands, a top sheriff’s official who is in charge of the potential discipline of any responsible employees, was later made available to talk about the cases. He declined to say why they weren’t investigated. “There are policy violations that have occurred here,” Sands said. “It’s obvious, but I can’t comment on who or what.”

“This nothing-to-see-here attitude is the worst kind of unaccountable arrogance, and Mr. Arpaio needs to step down before any more damage is done to public confidence in our law enforcement and justice system,” Grijalva said. “The picture emerging – no follow-up, no investigation, no prosecution, no justice and a shield of silence after the fact – is not how we conduct law enforcement in this country. Enforcing laws against violent crime, whatever a victim’s legal status, is mandatory and not something we leave to individual communities as an open question. Selective enforcement undermines respect for our brave legal officers and is rightly not tolerated by the public.

“Mr. Arpaio might love headline-grabbing crackdowns and theatrical media appearances, but when it comes to the everyday work of keeping people safe, he seems to have lost interest some time ago. He should give the affected families a sense that justice is finally being done by taking the honorable route and resigning now.”

National GOP Group Calls on Rick Perry to Quit Race for President

This release was sent to us by Café Con Leche Republicans.

 For Immediate Release

1 December 2011

Marshall, Minnesota – Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry has received the endorsement of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Arpaio is already campaigning for Rick Perry.

Before this endorsement, Perry’s campaign was already flailing with support levels in single digits. The latest Gallup poll shows Perry in fifth place with just eight percent of likely Republican voters supporting Perry. We believe the Arpaio endorsement is a colossal blunder from which Rick Perry will never recover, and we call on Rick Perry to leave the presidential race.

Joe Arpaio is widely detested among Hispanics, and news stories about racial profiling, prisoner abuse, etc. are staples in the Hispanic media. For example, a pregnant immigrant was forced to give birth in shackles, and Arpaio is notorious for racial profiling and for his neighborhood sweeps of Hispanic neighborhoods. Most experts believe that the successful GOP nominee will need Hispanic support in the 40% range, as received by George Bush in 2004. Hispanics are now 16% of the U.S. population.

Obama has already stated: "We may just run clips of the Republican debates verbatim. We won't even comment on them, we'll just run those in a loop on Univision and Telemundo, and people can make up their own minds." With Rick Perry and Joe Arpaio planning to campaign together, Arpaio’s negative image among Hispanics will become Rick Perry’s negative image as well.

Obama received 67% of the Hispanic vote in the 2008 election. Despite Obama’s record as the “deporter-in-chief” who has utterly failed to honor his campaign promises on immigration reform, we foresee support for Obama at 2008 levels or better if the eventual GOP nominee is perceived as hostile towards immigrants. If Rick Perry were somehow able to revive his campaign and win the nomination, in the general election Obama need only tie Perry to Arpaio to insure continued Hispanic support.

Arpaio’s support in the GOP primaries may not even help Perry. Despite the perception that Republicans strongly support enforcement only solutions espoused by Sheriff Joe Arpaio, in reality Republicans are deeply divided over immigration strategy with a slight majority supporting reform. According to a recent PEW Research poll, a majority of Republicans “favor providing a way for illegal immigrants in the U.S. to gain citizenship, if they pass background checks, pay fines and have jobs.” Among three predominately GOP ideological groupings, “staunch conservatives” split 49%/49% on immigration reform, while “main street republicans” favor reform 58%/39%, and “Libertarians” favor reform 66%/32%.

A recent Univisión sponsored poll found that not only are Latinos alienated by anti-immigrant rhetoric, so are Americans in general. By hitching his star to Joe Arpaio, Rick Perry has effectively torpedoed his campaign, and we respectfully ask Rick Perry to exit the race as he cannot win against Obama. We believe it is critical that the GOP nominee be a credible candidate, not only among Republicans but the general electorate, in order to defeat Obama in the general election.

Sheriff Joe (America’s #1 Latino Hater) Calls Off Chain Gang During MLB All-Star Game in Arizona

We really hoped we would make this all up. Really, we do. But this whole Arizona thing is just on another planet sometimes. Case in point: Sheriff Joe, our Favorite Sheriff in America to Mock at and Call Him a Pendejo, had an idea. Hey! When the All-Star Game is playing in Phoenix, we will employ chain gangs of illegal immigration offenders who were mostly charged with driving under the influence to work during the game!!!!

Yeah, that’s the ticket. Sheriff Joe gets his publicity and millions of Latinos would hate him even more.

Well, looks like Sheriff Joe got a CHANCLETAZO and decided to not go with the idea. As the Associated Press reports:

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told the Arizona Republic on Monday that he wants the focus to be on the children and the national pastime instead of his chain gang.

The sheriff had planned to have three chain gangs decked out in striped jail garb posted around Chase Field during Tuesday’s game. One was to be made up entirely of undocumented immigrants convicted of drunken driving.

Arpaio has been known to use big events to promote his tough-on-crime message.

Oops.
