You have got to be kidding us. The following bilingual ad by TIDE, which launched last fall and which recently aired CNN, has now become a online nativist symbol of all that is “wrong” about the United States.

Yes, a bilingual ad about laundry detergent. This is sad, people. Here is the commercial. Run away, here come the “illegals!!!!” (And for all who think this is a commercial about “Mexicans,” think again.)

Now for the comments. First off, from Tide’s Facebook page:

This is the United States of America. I am offended by your tv ad in Spanish. My great-grandfather immigrated here LEGALLY and noone spoke German for him! There are hundreds if not thousands of all Spanish tv channels. Put that ad on there and stick to English on the rest. I have stopped buying Tide products since seeing that ad and will not buy again until it is off.

From Tide’s YouTube page:

“I know right I don’t understand pandering to a bunch of criminals they need to adapt to living here.”

“it won’t matter anyway especially after the new amnesty. reagan is to blame.”

“Agree, US companies will sell out America for the illegal alien dollars I wish someone would call them out.”

“After seeing this commercial, I will never purchase the product again.”

Now there are a few comments in support of the commercial, which for the record, we think is awesome. First of all, it totally reflects a true bilingual and bicultural family. The abuela is also a bit hip, and come on, how many of you remember having to translate for your family?

So, Tide, good job on the commercial. The haters will always be haters. It takes hard work to try and change how this country portrays U.S. Latinos with a bit more authenticity. Your silly yet very clever bilingual detergent commercial does just that. You get points for trying, and points for great execution.

(H/T to @LuisMarentes for the heads up on this one.)
