Latino Rebels to Co-Host #UnLlamado Twitter Party About Afrolatino Identity

Tonight on Twitter from 9pm–10:30pm EST, Latino Rebels will be co-hosting a event with @AfroLatinosTV and @miss_rizos to discuss Afrolatino identity. You can RSVP to the event here.

As part of an indiegogo campaign to fund “Afrolatinos: The Untaught Story UN LLAMADO!”, the Twitter event can be followed using the #UnLlamado hashtag. The campaign also has a Change.Org petition asking major cable networks to support the project.

Dear Media Executives, Political and Religious Leaders, Celebrities, family and friends;

We are writing to express our disappointment that several networks we have reached out to, both nationally and internationally have not picked up our program.

We are requesting your signature in support of Afrolatinos: The Untaught Story.

There are an estimated 150 million afro-descendants in Latin America, many of which do not have political or economic power. This documentary television series aims to educate and initiate social change for this community of people.

The purpose of our petition:

1.     Gain network attention

2.     Get support from government and community agencies/organizations

3.     Give back to the community by telling this story

2011 was named the International Year for People of African Descent by the United Nations for which events were held internationally and organizations held meetings in order to promote the celebration of people of African descent throughout the diaspora. It was as an opportunity to fight against racism, racial discrimination, and the xenophobia that effects people of African descent.

Why is this story important?

Afrolatinos: The Untaught Story is an ambitious project. What makes this story different than others of the same subject is that we are focusing on all 21 countries throughout Latin America (Central America, South America, Caribbean, Haiti and Brazil). Our goal is to share knowledge. We want this story to reach households all over the world. We want to bring this story into Elementary Schools, High Schools, and Universities. Our mission is about including this story in history books and curriculums. Young children of African descent deserve to have their stories told and see images that reflect them on TV. In a social climate where bullying is on the rise, it will be crucial to have stories that our young children can relate to. Young children are being bullied because of the color of their skin and their socio-economic background. It is imperative that we begin to show our youth positive ways of seeing themselves. This is how we empower our youth by preserving history and showing them where they come from.

There is a large population of people who are without a voice and completely invisible. There are also a large number of people who are living in extreme poverty, facing both marginalization and discrimination within their communities—these are Afrolatinos.

Afrolatinos: The Untaught Story has been an absolute honor to shoot, study and share with the world, however we have hit a wall. Many of the networks we have approached are not aware of the value and power that this story possesses. The purpose of this petition is to gain the attention of key players in media and television distribution who will help us get this documentary on the air.

We need your help in showing them that THIS STORY MATTERS!

Why should we care?

Afrolatinos: The Untaught Story is about preserving history. Without storytellers, our traditions would be lost. If we don’t preserve our history it will disappear. We should care about what is happening to people around the world.  We should care about what is happening to the poorest communities throughout Latin America. This is a celebration of culture and traditions!

We are advocating for Afrolatinos and contributing to a new wave of activism much like that of the civil rights movement that has been so successful here in the United States. We are fighting for the rights of Afrolatinos—this is our movement.

This is a CALL and RESPONSE! Un LLAMADO y RESPUESTA!

We need the support of our community, friends, family, governments, political and religious leaders, as well as celebrities who truly care!

Estimados medios de comunicación, medios ejecutivos, líderes políticos y religiosos, Celebridades, familiares y amigos;

Les escribimos para expresar nuestra decepción y frustración, debido a que no hemos conseguido que ningún medio televisivo tanto a  nivel nacional como internacional se halla mostrado interesado en  nuestro programa.

Estamos solicitando su firma en apoyo de Afrolatinos: La Historia Que Nunca Nos Contaron.

Hay un estimado de mas de 150 millones de afrodescendientes en América Latina, muchos de los que no tienen poder político o económico. Esta serie de televisión documental tiene como objetivo educar e iniciar el cambio social para estas comunidades.

El propósito de nuestra petición:

1. Obtener un medio televisivo

2. Obtener el apoyo de los organismos gubernamentales y de la comunidad / organizaciones

3. Cambiar la situación en las que vive las comunidades afrolatinas por contar su historia

2011 fue nombrado el Año Internacional de las Personas de Ascendencia Africana, por la ONU para los eventos que se llevaron a cabo a nivel internacional. Diversas organizaciones celebraron reuniones con el fin de promover la celebración de la diáspora africana y la afro descendencia. Fue una oportunidad para luchar contra la discriminación racial y la xenofobia que sufren las personas de ascendencia africana.

¿Por qué es importante esta historia?

Afrolatinos: La Historia Que Nunca Nos Contaron, es un proyecto ambicioso. Lo que hace que esta historia sea diferente a otras del mismo tema es que nos estamos centrando en los 21 países de América Latina (América Central, América del Sur, el Caribe, Haití y Brasil). Nuestro objetivo es compartir conocimiento. Queremos que esta historia llegue a todos los hogares de todo el mundo. Queremos llevar esta historia a las Escuelas Primarias, Escuelas Secundarias y Universidades. Nuestra misión es incluir esta historia en los libros de historia y planes de estudio. Los niños de origen africano merecen que sus historias sean contadas y ver imágenes en la televisión en las cuales ellos se puedan ver reflejados. En un clima social en el que la intimidación está en aumento, será fundamental contar historias con la que nuestros niños puedan relacionarse. Los niños pequeños están siendo intimidados por el color de su piel y de su entorno socio-económico.

Es importante que empecemos a mostrar nuestras formas juveniles lo positivos de verse a sí mismos. Así es como damos poder a nuestros jóvenes mediante la preservación de la historia y mostrarles de dónde vienen.

Hay una gran población de personas que no tienen voz y son completamente invisible. También hay un gran número de personas que viven en la pobreza extrema, frente a la marginación y la discriminación dentro de sus propias comunidades-son Afrolatinos.

Afrolatinos: La Historia Que Nunca Nos Contaron, será un honor absoluto el compartir con el mundo, lo que hemos investigado, y descubierto en cuanto al tema pero  sin embargo nos hemos topado con un muro. Muchas de las redes televisivas que se han acercado no son conscientes del valor y el poder que esta historia posee. El objetivo de esta petición es para ganar la atención de los jugadores clave en los medios de comunicación y distribución de televisión que nos ayudarán a conseguir  poner este documental en el aire.

Necesitamos su ayuda para mostrarles que esta historia es importante!

¿Por qué debería importarnos?

Afrolatinos: La Historia Que Nunca Nos Contaron se trata de preservar la historia. Sin narradores, nuestras tradiciones se perderían. Si no preservamos nuestra historia, se desaparecía. Debemos cuidar sobre lo que está pasando con personas de todo el mundo. Debemos cuidar sobre lo que está pasando con las comunidades más pobres de América Latina. Esta es una celebración de la cultura y tradiciones!

Estamos abogando por Afrolatinos y contribuyendo a una nueva ola de activismo muy similar a la del movimiento de derechos civiles que ha tenido tanto éxito aquí en los Estados Unidos. Luchamos por los derechos de los Afrolatinos-este es nuestro movimiento.

Esta es una llamada y una respuesta! Un Llamado y respuesta a nuestra comunidades afrolatinas.

Necesitamos el apoyo de nuestra comunidad, los amigos, la familia, los gobiernos, los líderes políticos y religiosos, así como las celebridades que realmente se preocupan!
