Seriously? This in from Santa Fe.

What do you think?

Looks like the controversy is brewing out in New Mexico, as this local story reports:

The man in charge of the Santa Fe Reporter said Our Lady of Guadalupe is an iconic symbol of Santa Fe, and that’s why the weekly newspaper included a version of her on the cover of an edition about fun things to do this summer.

“She is a cultural icon in this town, not just a religious one, which means she belongs to the whole community not just to the church,” publisher Andy Dudzik said. “I don’t think we did anything wrong.”

Catholics and many other people in Santa Fe disagree. They said they were deeply offended to see such a holy figure in a bikini drinking a margarita on the cover of the newspaper.

“It’s offensive because the concept of Our Lady of Guadalupe is something that’s sacred. And some things ought not to be trampled upon,” said Frederick Schmidt, who is visiting Santa Fe.

The newspaper said the edition has been out for weeks but only in the last couple days they’ve been inundated with hate mail and threats. Despite that, the publisher stands behind the artwork, which he says is misunderstood.
