On January 5, we shared the news of John Paul Quintero, a 23-year-old who was shot to death by Wichita police. The story has gotten a lot of local attention in Kansas, but no national media attention. Last week, facing mounting criticism on how it officers acted when confronting Quintero (whom police claimed reached for his waistband), Wichita police also released 911 calls.

A few days later, Santiago Quintero went on local Kansas media to share more about his son’s death:

Never did [John Paul] say anything bad to police officers. He didn’t cuss at them, he didn’t say anything wrong to them. Always had his hands up in the air.

On January 7, family and friends held an emotional vigil that we know didn’t make CNN, MSNBC or any other major national news outlet.
