NEW YORK, NY – The Afro-Latino Festival of New York is excited to announce its lineup for Afro-Latino Fest NYC 2016, July 8-10!

The festival continues to expand its programming, balancing its core themes of education, celebration and affirmation across three exciting days featuring more than 20+ performing artists and 25 panelists at various locations throughout New York City.

Tickets are on sale now!

The festival starts on Friday, July 8, with the newly expanded Afrolatin Talks Symposium to be held at the world famous Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture located in Harlem. The Schomburg Center will host and sponsor the Afrolatin Talks, which have transformed into a full day of events addressing various issues affecting Afrolatinos in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.

The first day will include several panels with participants from the Washington Office on Latin America, the Open Society Foundations and the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum, to name a few, as well as a screening of the documentary Nana Dijo (Nana Said) and musical performances by salsa, timba and Latin jazz bands including Tito Puente, Jr.

This year the Afrolatin Talks also includes AfroCrowd, the Wikipedia crowd-sourced editing workshop, which follows up on the 2015 collaboration on Afrolatin@ Crowd. The festival also welcomes keynote speaker Moises Medrano, the director of populations for the Colombian ministry of culture, who will deliver a speech on current efforts around the UN International Decade for People of African Descent.

Days 2 (July 9) and 3 (July 10) will be held outdoors at Bed-Stuy Restoration Plaza, which has also joined the festival as a partner and sponsor. Expect performances by Los Rakas, Sango, Garifuna music legend Aurelio Martinez, Maluca, Nickodemus, Princess Nokia, Oshun and more. Returning for a second year will be the domino tournament hosted by the good people at Bien Conectao. The festival has once again teamed up with the ever popular Geko Jones of Que Bajo Crew, who will be hosting the Saturday concert performances with their cumbia, global bass, reggaetón and dancehall-infused party. The popular summer soiree Makossa BK also joins the festival, taking over the turntables for several hours on Sunday afternoon with their good vibes.

The festival’s organizers continuously strive to grow the number of sponsors, community organizations and partners, including the Schomburg Center, Bed-Stuy Restoration Plaza, their production partners, SaChin Productions, their new sustainability partner, eCo EventSource, the Caribbean Cultural Center & African Diaspora Institute, Technology Salon Brooklyn, Silicon Harlem, AfroCROWD, and Haitianbloggers.com.

The festival will take N.Y.C. by storm to affirm, educate and celebrate Afrolatino cultures.

THE AFROLATINO FESTIVAL OF NEW YORK:
The Afrolatino Festival of N.Y. celebrates the contributions of Afrolatinos through networking, cultural exchange, artistic showcases, culinary presentations, and education. It serves as an important platform for organizations working within Afrolatino communities to raise social awareness and highlight their work. Our mission is to provide a positive public space to pay tribute to the African roots of people from Latin America and the Caribbean. We continue to commemorate the International Decade for People of African Descent declared by the U.N (2015-2024) and its principles of “justice,” “recognition” and “development.”
