Focusing on Latino voters in the key swing states of North Carolina and Georgia, political grassroots organization Mijente said that its 3rd annual “Voto de Mayo” on May 5 was the largest in the history of the 5-year-old group.
“It was really inspiring to see so many new and veteran volunteers join us, build community through all the digital tools, and encourage and support each other. At a time when [President] Trump’s actions are costing our families their lives we know it is our responsibility to build the political infrastructure we will need to topple him in November. That begins with strong volunteer infrastructure and Latino led organizing. That is what we were building last night,” Mijente political director Tania Unzueta said in a Wednesday release.
According to Mijente, a virtual digital rally the night of May 5 had a few thousands of viewers. The organization also said that close to 100 volunteers made over 28,000 calls to help Latino voters access coronavirus resources, register to vote, and get out the vote for Georgia’s June 9 primary.

The Voto de Mayo event was was the first major electoral organizing event of the Fuera Trump initiative, Mijente’s electoral program. It is just one component of a national Latino voter mobilization ahead of the general election in November, the organization noted.
