Happy Pride Month!

Despite continued struggles for LGBTQ+ communities worldwide, the month of June spotlights moments of hope, joy and celebration.

Let’s get down with this playlist of music by Latine LGBTQ+ artists. From Chocolate Remix to Sailorfag, this soundtrack reflects sabor from across the Américas.

But first, let’s deal with the reality of it all. Although 2021 marks five years since the tragedy at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, 2021 also marks a record year for anti-trans bills across the United States. (Texas has filed the most anti-LGBTQ bills out of all the states). Human Rights Campaign reports that 2021 “has already seen at least 29 transgender or gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by other violent means.” In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán implemented new anti-LGBTQ regulations, while Czech President Milos Zeman publicly announced his disgust toward the transgender community. And at a high school graduation in New Jersey, the valedictorian’s speech was cut short when he began discussing LGBTQ and mental health struggles.

But we’re here to share in the joy of all good things. So let’s applaud that, this year, Malawi held its first Pride Parade, along with cities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Texas, and others. And how ‘bout them Giants being the first MLB team to make a Pride-inspired logo for their on-field uniforms? And President Biden signed into law a bill designating the National Pulse Memorial and Museum on the site of the former nightclub. (I don’t know how that helps implement change, but it’s acknowledging the tragedy. And that’s a good thing, as too many times these stories are left untold.)

Let’s keep working toward more positive stories surrounding the LGBTQ+ community.

MANO‘s LGBTQ+ Playlist offers a glimpse into the great, big, wonderful world of Latine LGBTQ+ artists. We invite you to explore each artist’s discography, because the one track we’re featuring here is just one teeny-tiny example of what they do with music. There is so much more!

I hope your interest in these artists leads you to others, especially those who are making music that breaks down perceived boundaries. Some tracks are new, some are del pasado, some timeless, and all relevant.

For this playlist I suggest listening on Spotify, because it’s in the order I think they are best appreciated. There’s a narrative in this order. Let me know what you think.
