Editor’s Note: On Friday, Latino Rebels received the following statement from the “Opposition Alliance Against Dictatorship” group.
The following statement was issued by a delegation conformed by leaders of the organization “Opposition Alliance Against Dictatorship,” Hondurans living in the United States, alumni and current students of Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Earlier this week, this delegation met with AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre. They also held meetings in Capitol Hill, the Organization of American States and the U.S. State Department.
OAS and State Department don’t agree on Honduras political crisis
The Organization of American States OAS is recommending new elections in Honduras due to the “poor quality” of the process. The OAS has never before issued such a clear negative technical report and explicitly called for elections to be rerun. At the same time, the U.S. State Department  recognized Juan Orlando Hernandez as the winner. Democratic reconciliation will not be achieved by ratifying a deeply flawed election and repressing citizens who object. The difference of positions between OAS and State Department is a rare situation that has been observed by an Honduran delegation that is currently visiting Washington DC and has had meetings with both offices.

Members of the delegation:
  • Dr. Luther Castillo Harry, Garifuna physician and former Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs under the Zelaya administration. Graduate of Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
  • Mayor Amable de Jesus Hernandez of San Jose de Colinas Santa Barbara and leader of the Libre Party,
  • Gerardo Torrez, head of International Relations for the Libre Party and the National Alliance against the Dictatorship,
  • David Nataren Oyuela, an economist currently studying at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.
