A media release published Monday by national Latinx political organization Mijente, announced its endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders for president. Politico was the first to report about the endorsement, the first ever presidential endorsement by Mijente.

According to the Mijente release, the organization started its endorsement process in 2019, which included analyses, member discussions, candidate engagement, and a membership vote from Mijente members who voted for Sanders.
“Trump’s re-election is a direct threat to our communities and families,” Marisa Franco, director and co founder of Mijente said in the release. “We cannot and will not sit on the sidelines. Senator Bernie Sanders has a long history of progressive stances, and he has consistently remained on the side of working people. We need a president who will fight like hell for change that is long overdue and who will not quickly return to pre-Trump, quasi-progressive policies. We believe Sanders is that person.”
“Our fight is bigger than electing any one candidate or platform. Victory is what we build together and whether our communities are in a position to work together effectively after this cycle. Mijente is a network of organizers. We have taken on the biggest battles of our time – and won. Now we are taking the fight to the presidency. Together as Latinx and Chicanx people, we will organize, and we will win in 2020,” Franco added.
The Mijente release said that it will employ field and digital tactics to support the Sanders campaign, although it noted that it will not be working for the Sanders campaign.
“We’re not picking a savior, we’re picking our target” Franco told Politico. “We didn’t pick him to be the fixer of all things.”
“It continues to build momentum that every single progressive, immigrant-focused, Latino organization has lined up behind us,” Sanders Nevada state director, Sarah Michelson, told Politico.
