Has it come to this? Certain tragedies will get more attention over other ones? Such is the case of the Thursday shooting at Aztec High School in the town of Aztec, New Mexico, that led to the deaths of two 17-year-old students: Casey Jordan Marquez and Francisco “Paco” Fernandez. It has definitely become a story that has not gripped the national consciousness. Besides a brief quick national segment or two, their names are quickly being forgotten, because nobody in the massive mainstream media is really talking about them.
The internet, however, has not forgotten, and people are doing what they can to help. A fund for Fernandez has generated more than $16,000. According this his uncle:
Francisco fernandez “Paco” is my nephew. I am making this account to allow people to make donations. All donations will be used to cover any expense that we may have. Paco was a victim of the Aztec high school shooting on December 7, 2017. He was in eleventh grade and had a bright future ahead of him. Paco will be remembered as a great loving kid. May you rest in peace mijo we all love you. This is the ONLY OFFICIAL GoFundMe account for our family member Paco.
A fund for Marquez has gotten more than $10,000:
Today a senseless and tragic school shooting took place at Aztec High School. At Mesa Sand and Gravel we are a family and one of our employees lost a family member in this shooting. A young girl’s life ended after only 17 beautiful years. We are here to show our support and raise funds to help with the expenses.
As for the shooter? William Atchison, a white 21-year-old man, “had previously been investigated by the FBI for online comments about planning a mass shooting,” according to CNN.
As for the coverage? It has been ridiculously underreported.
We wonder why.
