A recent film acquired by HBO follows the story of a 12-year-old boy from Honduras caught by border agents as he tries to enter the United States. Starring Coco’s Anthony Gonzalez, Icebox shows Óscar Fernandez’ journey being recruited by gangs, and later held in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement child detention center. The film which has been lauded for its timeliness and its portrayal of current issues surrounding the treatment of immigrants, focuses on the treatment of children and unaccompanied minors.
At one moment, Óscar’s mother tells him over the phone, “You can no longer be a child, in this very moment you have to grow up…to survive.”
