Como Las Movies is an Austin-based indie cumbia pop band, blending genres to create a synthesized, fresh sound. The quartet, formed by frontman Nelson Valente Aguilar, Rene Chavez (vocals), Jaguar (Bass), and Alfredo Rios (percussion) was formed in 2013, and released their critically released EP Nuevo Wave in September of 2018.
Today, they’re premiering their “¿YPQSP?” video on Latino Rebels. The song was inspired by childhood memories while still tapping into adulthood themes.
“Lyrics in the song seem to represent a yearning to be comforted by someone or something—a lover, a friend, an idea, a dream, or even a memory,” Aguilar said in a press release.
He also told Latino Rebels the following: “I wanted something more intimate than our previous videos. I felt close-up shots would give a more detailed view of Como Las Movies. The idea was to make a connection and convey the meaning of the song with the viewer regardless of language. The black and white aspect throughout the video highlights the subtleties of each band member but also gives it a bit of glamour. Our director, TedNoir, did a great job of adding a cool retro feel with the overlay of images and color contrast.”
