A police officer frequently provided Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio with internal information about law enforcement operations in the weeks before other members of his far-right extremist group stormed the U.S. Capitol, according to messages shown Wednesday at the trial of Tarrio and four associates.

The indictment alleges that Tarrio, Cuban-American leader of the white nationalist group the Proud Boys, led the advance planning and maintained contact with other members as they breached the Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.

Many people online have questioned how a Latino can have such intense racist and discriminatory beliefs, but the idea that Latinos cannot hold racist beliefs ignores facets of Latino culture that can lead some to become entrenched in far-right ideologies. 

On Sunday the U.S. played Cuba in the World Baseball Classic to a crowd of fans of the game and protesters against the Cuban regime. The goal of the demonstrations was presumably to bring awareness to Cuba’s totalitarian regime, but it was really about proximity to whiteness.

Misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia are often used to draw more conservative Latinos to far-right political culture wars.

The LIBRE Initiative and its partner, Americans for Prosperity Action (a Koch Industries-funded group), withdrew its endorsement of Pete Flores, who is running in Texas Senate District 24. The withdrawal came after the candidate soundly rejected LIBRE’s initial endorsement.

Misinformation in each respective Latino community is rampant, especially among the Cuban Americans of South Florida, and it’s going to take more than just talking about it to defeat it.
